UNITED WAY OF SW MN MONTHLY UPDATE

New Year, New You? I am not a winter enthusiast; to be precise, my favorite winter sport is going back inside where it is warm and comfortable. Having said that, as I traveled about last week, I was struck by the beauty of the hoarfrost trees.

MCC PULLS OFF THE UPSET AGAINST SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA CHRISTIAN

The MCC Rebel Boys Basketball team came into last week knowing they were playing their toughest four-game stretch of the season. The Rebels would play the top two teams in the Camden Conference and the top 2 teams in the Red Rock Conference over the span of one week. Last week, the Rebels lost the first three games of the stretch getting blown out by RTR and then losing to both Lakeview and WWG late in the game, when the offense went cold or turnovers were committed at terrible times. That left the final game of the run, Tuesday at home against Southwest Minnesota Christian. The Eagles are again one of the top teams in the area and were coming off a 3-point loss to RTR on Monday night. This would be a game the Rebels will never forget.

MCC REBEL GIRLS HOST WWG

The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team looked to put together a winning streak for the first time this season when they played host to the WWG Chargers on Friday night. The Rebels beat MLAC on Tuesday night and MCC was hoping the momentum of a win over MLAC would lead to a great second game of the week against a team MLAC beat earlier this season. That unfortunately didn’t happen for the Rebels.

DRAGONS BEAT REBELS - GIRLS BASKETBALL

The MCC Rebel Girls played their second of two back-to-back games in Ellsworth. The Rebels were coming off a nice win against HLOF on Monday night and they were looking to beat the Dragons of Adrian Ellsworth for the second time this season. The Dragons have been struggling as of late, but they are always ready to take on the Rebels.

MCC BOYS TAKE ON WWG AT HOME

The Murray County Central Boys Basketball team was in Slayton on Thursday night for a big Red Rock Conference matchup. The Rebels and the SWC Eagles were tied for the top spot in the conference coming into Thursday night with neither team having a loss. The Chargers were in second place, one game back, after a loss to MLAC earlier this season. If the Rebels pulled off the win, they would remain tied for first place going into the Tuesday night game with SWC. If the Chargers won, it would create a logjam for second place behind the Eagles.

MCC GIRLS BASKETBALL WINS ON THE ROAD

The MCC Rebels were on the road Monday night to take on the Coyotes of Heron Lake Okabena Fulda. It was the first meeting between the two teams this year and for both teams, game one of a busy week. The Rebels will play Tuesday and Friday nights, all on the road. The Rebels hoped to get the week off to a good start after a poor performance against WWG last Friday. The Rebels would take some time, but they would pick up their 4th win of the season.

“Everything is going to stay the same,” remarked Tyler Johnson, owner of Johnson Auto Body & Glass (formerly Steve’s Auto Body & Glass) in Slayton. And though the next generation has assumed full ownership, the location and services of the downtown shop have remained the same for over fifty years.
