The MCC Rebel Football team hosted the Springfield Tigers on Friday night in Slayton. Throughout the week the forecast showed a chance of rain and thunderstorms and part of that took place on Friday. The Rebels and the Tigers have been two of the powers in Section 3A over the last 10 years with trips to the state tournament running through one of the two schools. The Tigers have dominated the regular season matchups but the playoff games have flipped back and forth over the years. The regular season domination would continue for the Tigers in a stranger way than normal.
The Tigers played a great first quarter - first with a defense that forced a fumble, and special teams that made sure a high punt snap set them up inside the Rebel 20-yard line. Madden Lendt scored a pair of touchdowns with the first on a four-yard catch, and the second on a 38-yard reception. Lendt was not done as he scored on a six-yard reception on the first play in the second quarter, and a 63yard run with 7:47 to play in the second. The Rebels’ only points came with the team down 28-0. Noah Frisk hit Dugan Kluis on a 35-yard pass play and Carson Lewis scored on a two-yard run with 5:07 to play in the second quarter. Carter Jackson answered back with a 47-yard touchdown run, and three minutes later Braxton Brown scored on a 57-yard touchdown catch with just one minute to play in the half. The Tigers took a 40-6 lead into the halftime break, but at that time lightening from approaching thunderstorms caused a delay, and then a cancellation of the second half with the Tigers getting a victory.
The Tigers showed off their dominance on both sides of the ball. The Tigers were bigger, stronger, and faster than the Rebels like they will be against most teams they play this season. What sets the Tigers apart from most teams is the ability to run the football and throw it. Parker Kuehn is one of the better quarterbacks in the area, and he has skilled pass catchers around him, as well as a physical line that can create holes for the running backs. Madden Lendt is a terrific wideout for the Tigers who scored 4 touchdowns in this game. The Rebels are now 0-2 this season and will be on the road this coming week as they play Sleepy Eye United at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s high school.
The Rebels will need to bounce back against a team coming off a nice win over RTR this past week.
