Two dozen students from Murray County Central High School Drama Department will perform the one act play “Rue” at 7 p.m. Monday, January 26 at the MCC Auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door.

“Rue” is the story of 16-yearold Josephine, a ‘child of the swamp’ who grapples with profound anxiety and grief after her parents’ mysterious disappearance. Set in the misty Louisiana swamp, Jo refuses to leave the swamp in hopes of her parents’ return. She becomes trapped in isolation and negative thoughts, but is guided by Ole Man Creesha, a wise swamp elder who helps her gain new perspective, overcome fear and rediscover hope.

The MCC Drama Department performed against 6 other schools Saturday, January 10 in Redwood Falls.

According to Director Isaac Harms, creating an authentic bayou world was a logistic hurdle. Another production challenge was balancing rehearsals with the students’ sports, school and other schedules.

“These roles demand everything from our students—emotional honesty, physicality, and that spark of Southern mysticism,” Harms said. “Watching them bring out their characters has been inspiring. These obstacles have only strengthened our bonds and sharpened our focus.”

Harms said “Rue” encourages viewers to resist getting lost in negative thoughts and promotes seeking the good and light in life, no matter the circumstances.

“In a world that can feel overwhelming, “Rue” reminds us there’s always a way to find clearer waters,” Harms said. “Please join us to support our dedicated cast and crew – their passion shines through every performance.”
