Hello to the Murray County & Slayton area! I am pleased to be joining the awesome Wheel-Herald team and I enthusiastically look forward to serving in a variety of capacities in and around the community. I have spent the past 15 years working in the newspaper business — 12 years at the Marshall Independent and 3 years at the Balaton Press Tribune — and I am excited to continue in doing something I love here at the Wheel-Herald.

EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE ON THE HORIZON FOR THE CITIES OF LAKE WILSON & CHANDLER WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE SMALL CITIES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Cities of Lake Wilson & Chandler were awarded Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) grants through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). This program aims to help smaller communities preserve their existing homes as safe, healthy, and affordable options for future generations.

REGISTER NOW FOR SLAYTON WINTER CROPS DAY & SMALL GRAINS PROGRAM IN SLAYTON, MN

The University of Minnesota Extension Slayton Winter Crops Day and Small Grains Program will be held in person on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at the 4-H Building in Slayton. Registration will begin at 8:30 am, with the program running from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Whether you farm or work with farmers, this program is a great opportunity to hear the latest University-based research and information about corn, soybean, and small grain production issues and management strategies. The morning’s Winter Crops Day program will focus on corn and soybean management topics pertinent to our area. The Southern Small Grain Workshop will follow in the afternoon, where topics will address successful small grain management.

MURRAY COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER SCHEDULES COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE FEBRUARY 1ST

Slayton, MN – Murray County Medical Center and Community Blood Bank will hold a community blood drive on Wednesday, February 1 between 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Murray County Medical Center. The need is high and residents are asked to consider donating blood to support the local blood supply. Donors can schedule their donation by logging onto cbblifeblood.org, selecting “events”, and February 1, Murray County Medical Center or calling 507-836-1286, walk-ins are welcome. All who donate receive a Subway gift certificate as a thank you.

PLUM CREEK LIBRARY SYSTEM OFFERS WRAPPED IN READING AUTHOR TOUR IN FEBRUARY

The libraries of the Plum Creek Library System will be offering “Wrapped in Reading Author Tour”, a series of four virtual programs throughout February. The program will feature well-known regional authors writers including Jeanne Cooney, Lorna Landvik, Chad Lewis, and Brian Freeman.

SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES FIRE DEPARTMENT NEEDS AND GRANTS

Slayton City Council met on Tuesday, January 17th at 6pm. The agenda was approved with additions and the meeting minutes were approved from the January 3rd meeting. The claims were reviewed and approved, including pay app #2 for the Airport Driveway Project ($29,482.75) to Reker Construction & Aggregate.
