HOSPITAL WEEK EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION CEREMONY

The first National Hospital Day was established in the year 1921 by President Warren G. Harding as an attempt to inspire community members to support hospitals after the Spanish flu outbreak in 1918. The devastating epidemic killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide, including more than 675,000 Americans. He picked May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, to honor the famed nurse who set initial standards for hospital quality during the Crimean War of 1854.

What We Live By

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” - 1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV The philosopher-physician Richard Cabot makes a convincing case in his book “What Men Live By” that we all need four things to live a full and genuinely good life: work, play, love, and worship. And while this book was written more than a hundred years ago, the simple truth remains that we all need a modicum of work, play, love, and worship, and in the right balance, to be truly fulfilled as human beings.

GOOD NEWS

For twelve years a man devoted his life as a hold-up man and a kidnapper. He was caught and sent to prison. It was there that he came to know Jesus Christ and became a changed man. He served out his years and as he was leaving the prison he was handed a letter from another prisoner. The letter said, “When I came to prison, I despised preachers, the Bible, and all Christians because of the ‘holier than thou’ attitude so many have and all the hypocrisy I’ve seen over the years. For a lack of anything else to do I attended Bible class and the preaching services. I was told that you had become a Christian and I believed it was all just pretend so you could get a parole. However, I’ve carefully watched you for the last two and a half years; In the yard as you exercised, in the shop as you worked, at meal times, and when we were coming from or going to our cells. I want you to know that I am a Christian now because of my observation of your life; Christ truly lives in you. God bless you brother for being such a godly example.”

THEOLOGY IN THE TRENCHES

Two years ago, a series of four articles entitled “Tato” were published as columns. A condensed reprint of them might be timely. This true story was told to me by Orest who is married to my first cousin. They live in Omaha, Nebraska and have two adopted Ukrainian sons. May we remember well, how quickly freedoms can be taken and to never take what we have for granted. May we hear the voices of those who have gone before us and learn from them. Tato is one voice, and in the end, his perspective is sheer inspiration.

MCC GOLFERS TRAVEL TO WORTHINGTON FOR RED ROCK CONFERENCE MEET

The rain didn’t stop the golfers at the Red Rock Conference meet in Worthington on Tuesday, May 17. MCC was prepared for the challenging 18-hole course, but still got tripped up sometimes on the fast greens and thick roughs. Overall, the Rebels played very well despite the not so perfect conditions.
