The true team series was originated in 1987 by the State Track and Field Coaches Association, to address the need in Track and Field for a True TEAM competition. In previous years, a team with a few elite athletes could win the “Team Championship” in a large meet. The Coaches felt the Team Championship should be won by the best TEAM.
In True Team competition, each team is allowed 2 entries in individual events and 1 entry in each relay event. Every entry is placed and scored according to their order of finish, with the idea that a team’s second entry becomes just as important as their first entry.
Throughout the State, there are 8 Sections in each Class, with the Champion in each Section Advancing to the State Meet. As of 2018, all section 2nd-5th place teams will compete in a “paper meet” with the top four teams also advancing to the state meet as “Wild Card” teams. The state meet will consist of 12 teams per class per gender.
Minnesota is the only State which holds True Team competition in Track & Field. It is governed, coordinated, and sponsored by the State Track & Field Coaches Association.
The 2023 Section 3A meet was held in Slayton with the teams of Adrian/Ellsworth, Canby/Minneota, Hills-Beaver Creek, Lakeview, Luverne, Murray County Central, Pipestone Area, Redwood Valley, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton, Tracy-Milroy- Balaton, and Windom competing.
Luverne would win the boys and girls section championships while Canby/Minneota girls and SWC/E boys were runner ups. MCC placed 6th on the girls side and 9th on the boys. Top scorers included: Girls 4x800 Relay - 2nd (Brylei Schreier, Lindsey Hause, Lily Daniels, Amanda Overgaauw) 4x400 Relay - 1st (Brylei Schreier, Ashley Overgaauw, Sophia Nelson, Amanda Overgaauw) Ashely Overgaauw 1600 - 1st, 800 - 1st Brylei Schreier 400 - 2nd Sophia Nelson 1600 - 7th Lindsey Hause 300 H - 5th, High Jump -8th Megan Bakke 800 - 8th Amanda Overgaauw 3200 - 1st Brealyn Damm Long Jump 7th, 100 H - 7th Boys Ashton Kalas 110 H - 4th, 300 H - 7th Ben Ahlers 110 H - 7th Caleb Rosenbrook Pole Vault - 7th Dylan Doeden Discus - 5th
