The MCC Rebel Volleyball team was on the road for the first time this year Thursday night. The Rebels played at Dawson Boyd High School against the Blackjacks in the third game of the Rebels’ season in the final game before Red Rock Conference play. The Blackjacks were looking for their first win of the season while the Rebels were trying to pick up their second win of the week. It was a long drive but the Rebels would leave happy.

The MCC Rebel Football team played their second game of the season on the road this past Friday night against the Springfield Tigers. The Tigers have won section 3A the last three seasons and finished second in the state tournament the last three years. The last team to win the section was the MCC Rebels in 2021. A year ago, the Tigers beat the Rebels twice by 10 points each time, the last being in the section final. The Rebels were looking for some revenge. But with their starting quarterback out of action, the Rebels needed to just score their first points of the season first.

Approved by unanimous vote of the Fulda School Board was the certification of the preliminary 2026 tax levy that is payable in 2027. A motion was made, and seconded, to approve the maxmium amount allowable for the levy.

Welcome back to a brand new school year! Here’s an update from the Counseling Center. I’m Christina Walker, the Career & Academic Advisor. I’m so excited for another year and another opportunity to support our students. My priorities are preparing students for college and careers beyond high school and helping remove barriers to them realizing their goals. Finalizing schedules, sharing scholarship information, coordinating district assessments and making connections with local partnerships are all part of this role.

The Slayton City Council met September 2 with a short agenda, with acting Mayor Blake Heronimus running the meeting in the absence of Mayor Miron Carney. City Administrator Josh Malchow informed the council that he and Carney would be participating in a community leader meeting September 15th that was arranged by Murray County.

Murray County Central School Board met in regular session on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025 with all members present. The agenda was approved with no additions. They also approved the minutes from the last meeting, the payment of claims, trial balance summary and cash flow projections. The Superintendent’s personnel recommendations included numerous co-curricular assignments along with a few new para positions that include Aranda Forsberg, Kayla Mihin and Jackie Veldhuisen. Krista Gillette, Brittney Gorter, Isaac Harms, Kirsten Harms and Britta Malchow also had lane changes approved. The board approved the resignation of paraprofessional Casey Gass. Kristin Nau also resigned from her Cross Country coaching position and Jason Wischnak resigned as Knowledge Bowl Advisor. Finally, they approved the Non-Public Transportation rate.

Court Queen of Peace met August 26 for a potluck supper at Gullard Park with 16 members present. Regent Deanna Konkol called the meeting to order followed by prayer, flag pledge and secretary’s report. Treasurer, Betty Palmer was not present. Financial secretary, Barb Minnehan, gave a reminder of the financial review in October and informed the Daughters of the new District Deputy from Marshall court.
