By John Stenen Many years ago a group of ladies from a large denominational Church asked me, “What is fasting all about in the Bible? Our minister never talks about it because when he tries doing it, it only makes him crabby.” So, I explained it to them. In Isaiah 58: God rebuked Israel for fasting with the wrong motives; then, in verse six He tells them what fasting is all about. First of all, to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke (of bondage).” God continues on through verse 12 telling them of all the good things they could accomplish including healing for their bodies. Please study that chapter. The New Testament leaves fasting totally up to the individual, but He does expect us to fast. Do you remember Acts 10:38 where Peter said, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.?” Many Americans are oppressed and some possessed by demonic spirits and they need deliverance. Quit blaming God for your problems. On one occasion the disciples asked Jesus why they could not cast the devil out of a boy, and Jesus replied, “This kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.”
