The Slayton City Council met on Sept.16, 2024 with all members present. The minutes from the previous meeting and the agenda with one addition were approved. The claims were also approved. FEMA is in town. They are hoping to have an office somewhere in Murray County set up soon to handle claims from private property individuals. Josh will attend the county Cannibus Zoning meeting being held on Tuesday. In unfinished business, the council reviewed and discussed the 2025 budget. The amended budget for 2025 was approved. The next item was the Small Cities Development program. The City of Slayton was awarded $737,840 in SCDP funds.

The Friends of the Casey Jones Trail proudly celebrated a major milestone with a ribbon- cutting ceremony on Sunday, September 8th. This event marked the official opening of the final paved segment in the 12-mile stretch of the Casey Jones Trail, extending from Woodstock to Pipestone.

September 2024 – “Public School Boards Have Heart” September is Minnesota School Board Recognition Month. It’s a great time to recognize our elected community members who selflessly give their time and energy in support of high-quality public schooling for our youth.

The MCC Rebel Volleyball team started their season with two losses. Thursday night the Rebels were at home for the first time this season. The Rebels played the Dawson Boyd Blackjacks. A year ago, the Rebels went to Dawson, losing 3 games to 1. The Rebels would look for a little revenge Thursday and they would get it.

The MCC Rebel Volleyball team was on the road Tuesday night to take on the Red Rock Central Falcons. The two teams entered the game with 1-2 records but the Rebels were coming off their dominating win over the Dawson Boyd Blackjacks. The Rebels were hoping to make it two wins in a row while picking up their first conference win of the season.

Update from the Counseling Center Hello! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Christina Walker, and I am the new Career & Academic Advisor for MCC High School. I’m thrilled to be in this new role to support our students. I graduated from MCC in 2005. I moved to Storm Lake, Iowa to finish my teaching degree at Buena Vista University and later completed a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Iowa. I spent the first several years of my career teaching in southeast Iowa, but was able to “move home” to Slayton five years ago. My husband, Jason, works at SRDC as Community Development Director, and my son, Camden, is now in 5th grade. We also have a baby girl on the way soon! After teaching junior high and high school English here at MCC for the past five years, I have had the privilege of getting to know many of the students in the high school. I am so thankful for the opportunity to provide support now in a different way. Finalizing schedules, sharing scholarship information, and helping to prepare students for college and careers beyond high school are all part of this new role. I will also be overseeing our online learning opportunities and district assessments.

The MCC Rebel Football team was at home Friday night taking on the Springfield Tigers. Springfield, last season had an amazing year, winning the Section 3A championship, then advancing all the way to the state title game, where they lost to the Minneota Vikings.
