Cameron 4-H Club

The Cameron 4-H club was awarded a Food Partner Grant from MN State 4-H funded by a gift from Compeer Financial. This award program funds 4-H clubs to partner with a local food shelf and food assistance programs to address food insecurity in their communities. The club decided to match the grant dollars with club funds to make a bigger impact. With a budget of $1000, we reached out to the Murray County Food Shelf to see how to make the biggest impact. Based on what the food shelf identified as needs and wants, we broke the kids into 5 teams and gave them each a budget of $200 and a shopping list of needs and wants. Once they had their shopping list and budget complete, we went to the grocery store and shopped. Each team checked out to see how close they were to their budget and if they were able to purchase all the needed items. This project helped the kids understand how to budget for groceries and differentiate between needs and wants. Additionally, we were able to provide over $1000 worth of groceries for Murray County Families in need.
