Annual contest rewards retailers who creatively spotlight locally grown products St. Paul, MN - Minnesota Grown and the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) are once again inviting grocery and liquor retailers across the state to support farmers and show off their local pride by entering the 2025–2026 Minnesota Grown Retailer of the Year contest, now open for entries through October 10 at 4 p.m.

By Crystal Reith After years of low market prices for raw wool, Blair and Tami Hellewell began researching ways to add value to their product. “We came across studies on wool fertilizer pellets from the University of Vermont,” said Tami. “Some other producers have been doing it, but none in this area.” The Balaton couple and their three daughters, Ashley, Jayda and Joelle, spent three years exploring the concept and have spent this year developing and marketing their 100 percent natural Ewe’nique Fertilizer product. To create the fertilizer pellets, sheared wool is first cleaned. Then, it is fed into a pellet machine where it is heated and processed into pellets. The pellets are cooled and then packaged.

Kids and parents gathered at Slaytona Beach in Slayton on July 21 to read, swim and play. The Murray County ECI FRED (Families Reading Every Day) Pool Party was a great way to beat the heat in a fun way!

What began as a business adventure for six friends in 1974 continues to thrive 51 years later. Brent Johnson, Jim Sorenson, Rick Like, Tim Petersen, Kim Siewert and Curt Herding started Hadley Steel as a labor force responsible for erecting grain bins and installing drying systems on behalf of other dealers. “In 1976, they became dealers and started selling bins and dryers. By the early 80’s, it was owned by Brent and Jim. They had purchased the old hardware store in Hadley and added raw steel sales and had also hired a welder,” said Dan Johnson who bought the business with Tony Sorenson from their dads in 2013.

Kellen Hollahan, Natalie Slinger, Zoe Nelson, Myles Timmerman, and Vincent Bray, members of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Chapter at Fulda High School, recently competed at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference (NLC) held in Orlando, FL from July 5-July 9, 2025. The conference welcomed thousands of students from across the nation for a week of competition, leadership development, and career exploration. This year’s National Conference theme challenged students to “Dare to Dream” with FCCLA.
