The little boy was holding the reigns and patting his father’s horse in front of the house; dad would soon be leaving on a trip. As he waited, a stranger passing by said, “Can your horse go fast, my boy?” “No, not very.” He replied. “But, he can stand fast.” To ‘stand fast’ is a virtue not to be despised in either a horse or a man. In Ephesians 6:, the apostle Paul encourages believers to be clothed with the armor of God so that we can stand against the wiles (methods) of the devil. Paul tells us, that having done all to stand, we are to continue standing. Christians are in a spiritual war and we are to fight the good fight of faith, and not quit! Paul also tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 NIV The good advice to “not sweat the small stuff ” is often followed up with the reminder that in the grand scheme of things it’s all “small stuff.” And yet still, we are often rankled by petty concerns or by things that are just not a big deal. We should keep the phrase “no big deal” close at hand for all the times when things don’t work out the way we want them to.

Advent Advent, it’s my favorite time of year! It’s my favorite because it can be an intentional time of slowing down while quieting the rapid pace that’s round and about. Glitter and glam doesn’t hold a candle to the real deal where tradition has us lighting our way in the wilderness, guiding us back to the Light.

The MCC Rebel Girl’s basketball team opened their season Tuesday night when they played host to the Jackson County Central Huskies. The Rebels won just three games last season and have a very young roster with Emily Rohrer the player with the most varsity experience. JCC on the other hand is young with two freshmen in the starting lineup but they also return 2 twenty point per game scorers from a year ago. Though the Rebels had a size advantage the young Rebels would have to beat a very aggressive full court press by the Huskies and for game one of the season that wasn’t going to happen.
