Some golfers spend a lifetime trying to get a Hole in One and it never happens. Wyatt Schumacher of Heron Lake got his first Ace at age 26.
On the evening of Friday, October 9, Wyatt and his wife Taylor decided to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather to head to Fulda for 9 holes at Town & Country Golf Club. Both are members of the club, and after a day of work at Schumacher’s Nursery & Berry Farm, Wyatt thought a quick round seemed like a good way to wrap up the week.
He describes himself as a ‘mediocre’ golfer with an 18 handicap. He played in high school, picked it up again in college and has gotten back into golfing just this year.
He lined up his drive on Hole #1 and when he watched the ball curve to the left, he groaned.
“That’s in the bunker,” he said.
“Looks like it,” Taylor agreed.
But when they headed over to look on the 305-yard dogleg, they couldn’t find the ball in the sand or around it.
“I thought it was in the sand. Taylor had headed down the hill to look for it, and then I looked up at the green and just wondered,” he said. “I had to go look. It seemed cocky, but I had to look.”
Much to his shock, the ball – a Pro-V one Titleist – was in the hole.
He called out to his wife of just under two years that he had found the ball, then pointed at the hole.
“No way!” she said.
The couple joked about whether to keep golfing.
“We might as well just go home,” he told her. “I can’t imagine what the round will be like after this.”
They did finish out most of the course, but were encouraged by fellow golfers to head back to Hole #1 for pictures and to grab the flag.
“The rest of the round was pretty much normal – that means not great,” he laughed.
Back at the clubhouse, Taylor carefully noted the details of the Albatross on the faded flag. Hole #1, Par 4, 305-yard dogleg to the left, using a Sim 2 Max driver.
While she wrote, Wyatt just grinned.
“This was definitely not on my list of plans when I got up today,” he said.
