After logging approximately 1.3 million miles on primarily gravel roads, Rich Wajer of Slayton is retiring from his job at our local United Parcel Service. “I’m officially retiring on February 28th, but I’ve got several weeks of vacation to use so my last day of driving was on January 6th. I have mixed feelings about retiring, but I guess it’s another step in life,” said Rich.

The MCC Rebel Boys Basketball team was on the road Tuesday night for a big Red Rock Conference game in Mountain Lake against the Wolverines. Both teams entered the game at 5-2 looking to continue their winning ways. The Wolverines had won 5 straight games. MCC had won 4 out of 5 games but was looking to continue the offensive play they established against HBC last Friday. The Rebels would get about half of what they wanted Tuesday night but most importantly they got the win.

The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team had six days off between basketball-related activities. The Rebels practiced on Friday, December 30th but because of the weather didn’t get back onto the court until Thursday of this past week and it wasn’t for practice, it was for a game. The Rebels would take on the Eagles of Southwest Minnesota Christian in Slayton Thursday night. The Eagles struggled early with a very tough schedule but the Eagles are getting ready to turn it on and they started against MCC.

The Murray County Central Rebel Girls basketball team was in Marshall this past Saturday to take on the Canby Lancers. These two teams were very similar coming into the game with both teams having 2 wins but struggling to score and close out games. The Rebels had a size advantage in this game and were hoping to use it in their favor. The Rebels would come out cold from the field and the Lancers would dare them to shoot. The Canby Lancers would hold onto the lead as the Rebels came from behind but no one was able to hit the big shot to put the Rebels in the lead.

The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team was on the road Tuesday night as they traveled to Jackson to take on the Huskies of Jackson County Central. The Rebels would be playing their second Big South opponent of the season. The Rebels lost to the Pipestone Arrows during the week between Christmas and New Years and for the second time this season the Rebels would lose to a team from the Big South.

The MCC Rebel Boys Basketball team got back to what could be called a nearly normal schedule last week. The Rebels played Monday against Pipestone before snow canceled a couple of days of school and eliminated two days of practice. The Rebels would get to practice on Thursday before playing host to the Hills Beaver Creek Patriots on Friday. The Patriots had played three total games on the season heading into their game against MCC but the young Patriots had struggled losing their first 3 games. The Rebels turned on the offense for the first time in over two weeks for the win.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023 I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday break and I wish everyone a Happy New Year, 2023. The holiday break this year was as long as it has been in my tenure due to the crazy weather that we had before Christmas and after New Year’s Day.
