The Murray County Central Rebel Girls basketball team was in Marshall this past Saturday to take on the Canby Lancers. These two teams were very similar coming into the game with both teams having 2 wins but struggling to score and close out games. The Rebels had a size advantage in this game and were hoping to use it in their favor. The Rebels would come out cold from the field and the Lancers would dare them to shoot. The Canby Lancers would hold onto the lead as the Rebels came from behind but no one was able to hit the big shot to put the Rebels in the lead.

The first half was slow with plenty of turnovers and missed shots. The Lancers’ lead would grow to double digits if they forgot to put the Rebels away in the second. The Rebels were struggling with turnovers and to take care of the issue, the Lions Club went again. Paige Nelson had a good first half against the Rebels leading the team with 7 points. For the Rebels, at the half, no one had more than 4 points while the Lancers had five players.

The Rebels would get hot in the second half scoring 8 of the halves’ first 13 points. The Rebels’ run would get them within 3 points of the Lancers. The Lancers would make a run to recapture the momentum and would use it to their benefit. The Rebels’ Seanna Swenson and Casey Miller would lead the Rebels in the second half. At no point did the Rebels tie or reclaim the lead and work as hard as they wanted, there just wasn’t a play to be made on the lead. Every time the Rebels got within three points they would recover with a pair of shots or the Rebels would turn the ball over. Brynn Kockelman would score 13 points in the second half knocking down 5 shots to lead the Lancers. With no one else scoring, Kockelman became the go-to player for the Lancers. The Rebels would take the loss on Saturday 44 to 38.

The Rebels showed some strength in the game and they did play much better in the second half but it wasn’t meant to be. The Rebels had two players in double figures with Casey Miller and Seanna Swenson scoring 10 points each. Karissa Hurd made a pair of three-point shots and had a free throw for a total of 7 points. Brynn Kockelman scored 17 points in the game and was the only Lancer to make a field goal in the second half. Though the Rebels outscored the Lancers by two in the second half they needed three more to force overtime. The Rebels will be busy this next week with road games in Jackson and Edgerton and a home game with Edgerton Public.
