After a long, cold spring, life is finally stirring at the lake and Brett Behrends and his crew at Pelican Cove are busy preparing for a fun summer on Valhalla Island. Brett recently purchased the bar and hotel, which includes a large beach, ten campsites and plenty of boat slips for guests. He is continuing improvements that were started by the previous owner and the summer hotspot will be your place for recreation and relaxation.
Mr. Behrends is a native of Slayton and works in a successful housing business in Brookings, South Dakota. He owns a cabin on Lake Shetek and this is his first endeavor into restaurant, bar and hotel ownership. But he hired Steve Koch, another Lake Shetek homeowner, to manage the business and the two are committed to maintaining the traditions and service lake guests have enjoyed for many years. “We’ve renamed the lodge and are calling it the ‘Lake Shetek Resort’ because it is so much more than a hotel or lodge,” explained Brett. “There is a honeymoon suite, four threeroom suites, four doubles and the ‘stack’ - condominiums with kitchens. All of the rentals can be used year-round and they have all been updated.” Brett and Steve describe a restaurant menu of sandwiches, burgers, pizza and wings. Brett laughed, “We have the biggest wings around - pelican wings!” Brett is excited to point out the docks that were installed last year, new sand for the volleyball courts and a small seasonal bar that is under construction on the beach. The team is planning many events for the summer season, including volleyball leagues, an ax throwing competition (similar to darts) and of course live bands. They will be open seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and are already dreaming about winter events. Memorial Day weekend will kick off the busy season with music and competitions, and on June 11th they’ll host a walleye fishing tournament. Pelican Cove is located at 21 Valhalla Drive and is also the perfect venue for reunions, family gatherings and weddings. For more information or to make reservations, call 507-763-3200.
