Three Inches Too Short!
“I have plenty—you don’t need to buy more.” Those were the words spoken. How could one not need more socks thought I as I stood in line to pay for the items in my cart?
That final line as one makes their way to the check-out—is never easy. As any seasoned shopper will attest to, one is tempted at each turn of the cart. Any self-restraint is gone once one hits the line to pay. Brilliant it is how those marketing the goods have engineered this predicament we find ourselves in. Packed they are with story books, cups, coffee, toffee, and tea. Packed they are with journals, doggy toys, and slippers. Packed they are with the final munchies worthy of grabbing before hitting the road. After all, one has burned a number of calories while enroute to the register so why not spend ten bucks more to munch popcorn, peanuts or cracker jacks all the way home!
As you can see, it wasn’t my fault when I spotted the beauties— in that aisle—that line that is full of temptation. Several pairs for just under fifteen bucks they were. Tones of black stared back looking good! After all, I’d spent so much on myself, certainly he deserves some new socks. He’d gone out to the car over an hour ago to read. “Take your time,” he said. “I’m just going to relax and enjoy my book.”
Even after recalling his words about not having a need for socks, I bought them anyway. Upon our arrival home, I pulled out each item—socks and all! His voice caught as he spoke, “So, you bought me socks?”
“Yea,” I said. “They look to be high quality and a good buy all in one!”
As he stared at the socks, I had no choice but to ask. “Don’t you like them? Is there something wrong?” He usually accepts things readily enough but the expression on his face was more puzzled than normal. So, I ventured once again pressing for an answer. “Something wrong with these?”
“Well, they are about three inches too short!” And that’s when I learned something I didn’t know before. I didn’t know he was particular about his socks. If he is, then others must be too—so women, be aware. It’s the little things needing heeding even if three inches doesn’t seem like much—it is.
Three inches off a haircut when one asked for a trim sort of adds up. A three-inch growth spurt in a child is worthy of note. Moving three inches over when someone needs to pass by is a delicate reminder that it’s the little things done for one another that add up to be the big things. A dress three inches too long needs hemming and one three inches too short needs to be let down. Socks three inches too short can leave room for a lot of cold when one sits down and the hem of the pant leg moves on up.
There is, however, one area in life that will never fall short by three or anything else for that matter. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit three in one fit the need for one and all. And the best part is, the three in One is a perfect fit for all sizes—no adjusting needed as the three are fit to cover all—no shortage there. Back in Deuteronomy 6:4 it says, “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” The Trinity is a revealed truth that will never ever fall short. Amen.
