GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener Underground stems of creeping grasses and Canada Thistle can travel as much as a fot through the soil before emerging.

When watering plants, apply water at ground level. This keeps the water where it neds to be - in the soil. Do not wet the leaves, as it will invite pest and disease problems.

Water at the coolest time of the day. Morning or evening is best. In the hottest part of the day, water evaporates quickly. Water deeply and less frequently.
