Slayton City Council held their regular meeting on August 5, 2024. The agenda was approved with one addition. The minutes and claims were also approved. There is a budget workshop coming up on August 22, 2024 at 5:30.
Lori Stainer is retiring from the Slayton Public Library August 30. Three very qualified applicant’s were interviewed and the city has hired Dwayna Paplow. Dwayna presently works in the Plum Creek System.
The Champ Drive road closure was discussed again. Kevin Nelson, an adjacent property owner, was there to express concerns about closing the street leading to his business. He pointed out that legally side-bysides are not allowed on highway 30. Bill Ellefson and City Works Director Weston Mahon were also in attendance to share their thoughts. Nelson also pointed out that he will soon have farm equipment needing to access his business and the road being open or closed will become an issue. Ultimately, the council decided to keep the block in place until they can revisit it again at the first meeting in October. They will also put some blocks out to prevent vehicles from cutting the corners causing more damage to the road.
Police Officer McKenna Schreier and Police Secretary Jackie Jurrens were approved to attend the BCA Criminal Justice Information Users Conference in St. Cloud in October.
A payment was approved to Towne and Country Excavating, LLC for the 28th St. sidewalk improvements project. City Administrator Josh Malchow explained to the council there are just a few things left so should be completely paid soon.
The council members finally went into closed session discuss a purchase agreement for a piece of personal property owned by Xcel Energy within the city of Slayton.
Following the closed session, a motion was made and carried to draft a response to Xcel in regard to their discussion.
