SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL PAYS TRIBUTE TO CITY ATTORNEY MERLYN ANDERSON

Mayor Miron Carney opened the Monday night Slayton City Council with a verbal tribute to City Attorney Merlyn Anderson, who passed away on Sunday, April 12 at the age of 84 years. Carney stated, “Merlyn has dedicated more than five decades of his professional life to serving this community. From the early 1970’s until recently, he helped guide this community through many changes. We remember Merlyn Anderson for the lasting impact he made on this community.”

The city council heard from Wonder World Board Secretary, Ashley Haken, who explained that the plans for the new building are continuing with the 2.1 million dollar budget. Strides are being made toward a ground breaking that is tentatively scheduled for June.

Josh Malchow, Slayton City Administrator, shared a schedule of events that is leading up to the closing of Northwest Natural Gas. Included was the fact that MinnWest Bank is offering to buy the bond issue at 5.5%, and the approval of Bond Trigger Resolution 04-202026A.

Malchow recommended that the city council remain as the governing organization for the new public utility company. An ordinance enabling the organization and regulation of the natural gas utility will be drafted with a public hearing to approve the ordinance set for Monday, May 4, 2026.

The next meeting of the Slayton City Council will be on Monday, May 4, 2026, 6 p.m.
