SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL MET JUNE 17TH

The Slayton City Council met on Monday, June 17, 2024. All council members were present. The agenda was approved with one addition, as well as the minutes from June 3 and June 10 meetings and the claims.

The council has received an Electric Utility Draft that was exactly what they had spoken about in their closed meeting. Xcel has acknowledged it. Once Xcel reviews it, the council is open to the possibility of having an in-person meeting with Xcel’s representatives, Frederickson & Byron.

City Administrator Josh Malchow and City Works Director Weston Mahon met with representatives from Duininck and DGR Engineering in regard to the Maple Avenue Project. There were 7 small items identified that need to be fixed. These will be taken care of once weather permits.

Krista Gillette, swimming pool manager, was present to discuss the possibility of a Caregivers pass for families that have high school students or grandparents bringing their children to the pool. It was approved that the family could purchase a Caregivers Pass for $40, effective immediately. They also discussed the need to update the sign at the swimming pool. The question was brought up -- should the name of the pool name be changed? When looking up the “Slayton Pool” Slaytona Beach West isn’t always defined as a pool for people not from Slayton. Also, we are more than just a pool - it is more of an aquatic park.

The council approved the single quote for 2024 chip seal coating from Pearson Brothers, Inc. The price did not change from last year and they have been happy with their past work. C&L Seal-Coating was approved to do the 2024 Crack Filling. The board has also been happy with their previous work.

Police Chief Jeremy Steinle presented the council with an option for stronger policies and trainings in place that will protect the city and officers should something occur. The company that Steinle is recommending for this service is Lexipol, LLC, out of Texas. These costs can be covered by the Police General Fund Budget.

Lastly, the council approved the Hospice Liquor License request for their Antique Car Show, July 20th and adjourned the meeting.
