Slayton city council met on Monday, May 6th. Missing were Mayor Myron Carney and Dean Ackerman. City Administrator Josh Malchow called the meeting to order. Meeting minutes from April 15th and May 1st were both reviewed and approved. The claims were also reviewed and approved.
For Notices & Communications – an update on the Burmeister Field Solar project was given to the council. The zoning board held their meeting on April 18th with many community members in attendance. They made a recommendation of 4 to 3 to the County Commissioners to approve the Condition Use Permit for the EESolar28 LLC project on Burmeister property. The County Commissioners will act on this at the May 7thmeeting.
Pending items included an update on all the contracted projects going on in the city right now: Broadband, Electric, Road Projects etc. Everything is moving along nicely.
Moving on to pending business. The council discussed the 28th street sidewalk construction project that is state/ federal aid grant funded. Because of the grant requirements, the council approved moving forward with the agreement with SEH for project management services for the project. SEH will handle all of the paperwork needed for the city to get the grant funds.
New business included the resolution to appoint election judges for the 5-14-24 Municipal Special Election being held. They also discussed the Gullord Park Playground toddler piece that needs to be replaced. The total cost is coming in at $22,123. Slayton Kiwanis and Murray County ECI will be doing fundraising for this item. The capital improvement budget has $20,000 for this project.
The next item of new business is the list of surplus city owned property in Slayton. There are some properties that the City no longer needs to own and they could look at getting rid of. The council needs to decide what to do with the properties and if they should be declared surplus. Some are small parcels that would probably be best giving to the adjacent landowner and some that should be sealed bid auctioned off. Council member Kate Harmsen felt it might be best to have a special workshop with all council members present. Malchow will set up a workshop date for the council.
They next moved into closed session to discuss a real property land offer.
With no other business the meeting was adjourned. The next council meeting will be May 20th.
