Slayton City Council met on Monday, March 18. All councilmembers except Chris Jacobson were present. The agenda was amended to include authorizations to post for seasonal hires. Agenda was approved. The minutes from the March 4 meeting were approved. Claims were also approved.
For Notices and Communications, Mayor Miron Carney and City Administrator Josh Malchow will be traveling to the Cities for meetings with region 8 legislators. Along with advocating for all bonding projects in the area, they will specifically advocate for 34th Street and Operation Prairie Venture.
Pending item included a reminder of the upcoming electric utility meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Murray County Central Auditorium. Xcel and Nobles, if needed, are committed to being present to answer any questions. Ballots are being printed and voting will open March 29 for absentee voting.
In new business, Scott LaVoy with DGR Engineering provided a report on the street improvement project. Two bids were received for the 2024 resurfacing improvement projects which includes Maple Avenue and Broadway Avenue. Duininck, of Prinsburg, had the low bid of $567,522.70. M.R. Paving, of New Ulm, submitted a bid of $621,459.83. Both bids were lower than the estimate of over $664,000. The Council awarded the contract to Duininck with the low bid.
The board then discussed Maple Avenue assessments which have gone down since the bids came in lower than the estimated amount. The estimated project of $128,400 has an adjusted frontage rate of 20% which is $32.74. With lower bids for the resurfacing, the estimate is now $108,000 with an adjusted frontage rate of $27.54, which includes 5 percent contingency. This is a unit price contract where if quantities are more or less, price could go up or down. The Council also approved Resolution 03.18.2024 Maple Avenue Improvement Project Resolution Accepting Bid and calling for the final assessment hearing after project completed.
Council approved declaring the 2017 vac trailer and 2015 jet trailer as surplus. The vac trailer was sold to a dealer from Sioux Falls for $50,000. The Council is hoping to sell the Jet Trailer for $25,000.
The last item of new business was to authorize the advertisement for summer help. The Council approved this request.
