The MCC Boys and Girls Track and Field teams traveled to Luverne for the Section 3A meet. Twenty four schools were represented, with individuals and relay teams vying for one of the top two places to qualify for the state track and field meet.
Thirteen athletes competed in fifteen different individual events at the section meet. MCC had three hurdlers run, with Carter Knakmuhs and Brealyn Damm in the short hurdles and Lindsey Hause in the 300s. Knakmuhs, who showed great improvement at the end of the season, ran a personal best time of 18.03 to place 11th. Damm finished in 10th place while Hause was 8th. Hause also competed in the high jump, leaping to a height of 4’9” to earn herself another 8th place medal.
Sophia Nelson and Alex Betz both ran the open 800. Nelson ran a season best time of 2:30 to place her 6th in the section. Betz ran a personal best time of 2:13 to finish in 13th. Callie Platt and Carson Engelkes also competed in the same event, the discus. Callie threw a sea-son best 88’3” to place 12th while Engelkes placed 15th.
Like the hurdles, MCC had three athletes in the pole vault; Chloe Kremer, Luke Iverson and Caleb Rosenbrook. Kremer was unable to clear the high opening height. Iverson vaulted to a height of 9’10” to place 13th while Rosenbrook went 10”10” to earn 8th.
In other jumping events, Torin ThunderHawk placed 11th in the high jump (5’8”) and Jayda Hellewell was 8th in the triple jump, jumping to a personal best distance of 32’8.5”.
In the individual sprints, Anikan Larson finished 4th in the 200 in a time of 22.98. Brylei Schreier competed in two events, the 400 and 200. In the 400, she would finish in 3rd, one place and 0.03 seconds away from qualifying for the state meet. In the 200, she would place 7th.
Seven relay teams, all four boys (4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800) and three of the girls (4x200, 4x400 and 4x800), competed at the section meet. Both gender’s 4x200 teams placed 14th. The girls 4x800 team was 13th while their 4x400 was 11th. Earning section medals by placing 9th were the boy’s 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 teams. The 4x100 team was made up of Thomas Huso, Anikan Larson, Luke Iverson and Andrew Holm. Beckett Stelter, Carson Engelkes, Andrew Holm and Anikan Larson ran in the 4x400. The freshman team of Beckett Stelter, Wesley Hause, Henry Carlson and Alex Betz made up the 4x800 relay team.
Although no individuals nor relay teams qualify for the state meet, it was an overall good day with many personal best performances achieved. Ending their high school track and field career were: boys - Ben Ahlers and Thomas Huso girls - Brealyn Damm, Lily Daniels, Callie Platt, Lindsey Hause, Jayda Hellewell, Brylei Schreier, Kylie Knakmuhs, and Abby Overman. Their leadership, work ethic and performances will be missed next year.
