May 14 Adrian/Ellsworth at MCC
eted their regular season on Thursday in Slayton. The Rebels played host to the Dragons of Adrian Area. The Dragons beat MCC earlier this season in Ellsworth 15-0, but the Rebels would play a much better game this time around. The Rebels didn’t get a win, but they would play a much better style of softball with fewer mistakes. The Dragons, who have had a terrific season, proved to be the better team.
The Rebels offense showed a good eye at the plate, drawing seven walks in the game. Kat and Hayden Miller were hit by pitches, giving the Rebels nine extra base runners in the game. The Dragons committed three errors in the game, but Brekkyn Dreesen would spread out the Rebels three hits to limit the damage as the Rebels scored just two runs in the game. Kate Blankenship got two hits for the Rebels in her final home game and Ava Deacon got one. Deacon and Joelle Hellewell would drive in a run each.
The Dragons offense was led by the top five hitters in their order. The top five hitters in the order came up with 13 of the teams 15 hits and all 8 of the team’s RBI’s. Tieser, Dreesen, and Jenniges had three hits each for the Dragons in the win. The big inning for the Dragons came in the 6th. Adrian Area scored 3 runs with two outs to extend the lead to 6, seriously hindering the Rebels’ chances at a comeback. The Dragons would beat the Rebels 8-2.
On Thursday Ava Deacon, Reese Wajer, Kate Blankenship, Calleigh Doeden, Lilly Kleven, and student manager Erica Doeden completed their final home games as Rebels. The Rebels were seeded 8th in the upcoming Section 3A South playoffs and will play Tuesday at 3:00 pm in Wabasso against #1 Wabasso. With a win the Rebels would advance to the double elimination round of the playoffs; with a loss to the Rabbits the Rebels season would come to an end.
May 19 Wabasso at MCC
The MCC Rebel Softball team was in Wabasso on Tuesday to take on the Rabbits in the opening rounds of the Section 3A playoffs. The playoffs have an elinimation round in the first round and the winners then advance to double elimination. The Rebels were the 8th seed and Wabasso is the top seed and defending section champions. The Rabbits would show off their terrific defense and an offense that features their running game.
The Rebels were facing maybe the best defensive team in the area. Tuesday the Rebels struck out three times in five innings. That means the Rabbits defense made 12 outs in the field without allowing a base runner. Ayla Jenniges, the Rabbits starting pitcher, threw just 47 pitches in the game while Kate Blankenship of the Rebels threw 113. The Rebels made contact and the Rabbits turned that contact into outs. The Rabbits made the Rebels pay especially with two outs. Wabasso stepped up with two outs throughout the game scoring over half of their team’s runs with two outs in each inning. The Rabbits finished the game with 10 hits and 10 runs in a perfect game.
The Rebels finish the season with 5 wins. MCC graduates seniors Lilly Kleven, Reese Wajer, Ava Deacon, Calleigh Doeden, Kate Blankenship and student manager Erica Doeden. The Rebels will have key players returning for next year but 2027 looks to be a very young Rebels team at the varsity level. It was a learning season for the Rebels and the team will need to continue to grow heading into next season.
