April 23 Edgerton/SWC at MCC

The MCC Rebel Softball team played a pair of games last week on Thursday and Friday to wrap up a busy week. The Rebels lost to RTR on Tuesday, played Edgerton/SWC on Thursday and then they were on the road on Friday to Ellsworth to take on the Dragons of Adrian Ellsworth.

The Rebels were playing two of the top teams in the Red Rock Conference in back-toback games and the Rebels struggled in a pair of losses.

The Rebels on Thursday fell behind early against the Flying Dutchmen, trailing 7-0 in the first three innings before they would get the offense going. The Rebels offense came alive with 10 hits in the game, led by four players with two hits each. Ava Deacon and Hayden Miller had two hits each with a single and a double. Calleigh Doeden had two hits and 3 RBIs for the Rebels. Addy Dierks added two hits, and along with Miller, scored two runs. The Dutchmen would get four key runs in the last two innings to preserve the win 13 to 7.

On Friday, the Rebels were in Ellsworth to take on the Dragons, who have been playing well to open the season. It was not a good showing for the Rebels, who allowed 8 runs in just the first inning and then after two scoreless innings the Rebels would give up 7 in the fourth inning. Ava Deacon led the game off with a line drive double to left field but that was the Rebels only hit off Breckyn Dreesen, who pitched a great game. The Rebels took their fourth straight loss 15-0 in four innings.

The Rebels are now 2-6 on the season with three tough games to come this week. The Rebels will need to collect themselves on defense. They struggled to hit the ball in two games from last week but have been a slow starting team. The Rebels could really use some early runs to help supply some confidence to the defense. MCC is set to play MLAC, RTR, and HLOF this coming week. April 28 RTR at MCC

The MCC softball team continued their struggles on Tuesday. MCC played host to RTR - a team that beat them by double digits a week earlier - and the Knights dominance continued. Charlie Paulzine got the start for the Rebels while Jada Fricke took the circle for the Knights. RTR would combine a great pitching performance with a strong day at the plate.

RTR posted five runs in the first inning, the first two coming off a two-run homerun by Laken Baartman. Jenna Lovre added a double that scored another run, but in the end the Knights would finish with 5 runs. Grace Devries drove in two runs in the third with her single to right field and Lovre came through with a double to drive in two. The Knights would score 15 runs in four at bats.

The Rebels at the plate faced Fricke for the second time in a week and she pitched well. The Rebels made contact with Fricke as she would only strike out three batters but MCC didn’t hit many hard shots. Ava Deacon and Reese Wajer got a hit each but that would be the offense for the Rebels. Fricke walked just one batter in the game and the Knights did not commit an error. The Knights would get the win 15-0.

Charlie Paulzine took the loss for the Rebels. Jada Fricke picked up the win for the Knights. It is tough to win games when you give up too many free bases and the Rebels have struggled in that area over the last week. Walks and errors become much bigger mistakes when the opponent can follow them up with base hits. The Rebels will try to get back on track on Thursday at Heron Lake Okabena Fulda.
