WWG 45 MCC 29

The Rebel Girls Basketball team was back in action this past Thursday night as they played host to the WWG Chargers. The Rebels had a chance to see the Chargers earlier this year at the Wabasso tipoff classic. The Chargers lost to MACCRAY before beating Wabasso while the Rebels were losing to GFW and then MACCRAY. The Chargers have won four straight games and were looking to make it 5 against the Rebels. MCC was looking to win their second straight conference game and improve their conference record to 3 and 1. Unfortunately for the Rebels a win wasn’t in the cards.

The Rebels did a lot of good things on Thursday night. The Rebels overall did a good job getting into their offense without turning the ball over at an alarming rate. MCC held their own on the boards and kept the Chargers offense in check. What they didn’t do well enough was score. The first half was a very even battle most of the way. Even though the Rebels never led, they kept the game close. Neither team shot the ball all that well but the Chargers top two scorers combined for 19 first half points. Riley Parker scored 10 and Leah Carter added 9. The rest of the Chargers scored six points. Ava Deacon scored 8 for the Rebels. No one else had more than 3. The Chargers led at the half 25 to 18.

In the second half, neither team improved on their first half scoring numbers. Leah Carter scored 12 second half points, while her teammates scored 8. The Rebels, as a team only scored 11. It was a tough half for the Rebels. They only turned the ball over 8 times, but they only made 3 shots from the field. Kelli Miller made two three point shots in the second half. Calleigh Doeden’s offensive rebound and basket was the team’s only other made shot from the field. MCC lost to the Chargers 45 to 29.

MCC shot just 18% from the field in the game and though they held the Chargers to 28% shooting, it wasn’t enough for MCC to get the win. With turnovers and rebounding being close, the Rebels offensive struggles were just too much to overcome. Leah Carter dominated the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Riley Parker scored 16 points and had 8 rebounds. MCC was led by Kelli Miller with 9 points and Ava Deacon with 8. The Rebels will play in Tracy on Monday and in Edgerton on Tuesday before playing at home Friday night. MCC is now 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in the Red Rock Conference.
