MCC 60 SWC 59

The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team was on the road on Friday night playing the perennial favorite in the Red Rock Conference, the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles. The last time the Rebels beat the Eagles was February 12, 2011. The Rebels Suttyn Schryvers was less than two years old. Friday, the MCC Rebels would break the streak after 5,046 days.

The Rebels lost to RTR on Tuesday night, but the Rebels played one of their best halves of the season in the second half against the Knights. That strong finished continued on Friday, as the Rebels jumped in front. Over the first few minutes, the Rebels led, but struggled to pull away. Then the Rebel guards started to make shots from the outside and MCC pulled ahead 23 to 9. The Eagles made a strong push at the end of the half but the Rebels led at the halftime break 27 to 18.

The Rebels nine point lead would disappear pretty quickly in the second half, as the Eagles came out fired up. But the Rebels always seemed to have an answer. The Eagles would score to get within a couple points of the Rebels and MCC would find points. With the clock under three minutes, the Eagles Took their only lead of the second half on a three point shot by Hannah Caspersen. The lead lasted just seconds, as Kelli Miller answered with a three point shot of her own and then, after a rebound, the Rebel senior made both free throws to put MCC up 3. With under 8 seconds to play in the game, Ava Deacon went to the free throw line and made one of two putting the Rebels up 4. The Eagles made a three point shot, bringing the final score to 60 - 59.

In a one point game the smallest stats can stick out. The Rebels and the Eagles were very even in rebounding, turnovers, and free throw shooting. MCC made one less free throw than the Eagles but shot a much better percentage. The Rebels shot a better percentage everywhere on the floor on Friday night, including a season high from the field of 43%. MCC made 2 more three point shots than the Eagles which were huge. Ava Deacon and Kelli Miller scored 15 points each for the Rebels and Kat Miller scored 11. The Rebels beat the Eagles on December 4th 2009 49-48 in Edgerton. The following season the Rebels beat the Eagles February 12th, 2011 51-50 again in Edgerton. The Rebels would get their second win of the season and their second Red Rock Conference win of the year. The Rebels will host WWG on Thursday night in their only game of the week.
