Pipestone 68 vs MCC 49

The MCC Rebel Girls opened the week Tuesday night in Slayton. The Rebels were battling the Pipestone Arrows in a non-conference basketball matchup. The Rebels were also battling illness with a pair of players out of the lineup. The Rebels a year ago lost to the Arrows on free throws with no time left on the clock after blowing a double digit lead. The Rebels were hoping to get a win this time around. Unfortunately that wasn’t to be.

MCC got off to a good start as Taylor Larson scored the first five points of the game and the Rebels jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Rebels held their final lead of the game at 8-6 with 11:30 to play in the first half. The Arrows would take control at that point, outscoring the Rebels 18 to 1 over the next 8 minutes of game time. The Rebels struggled with turnovers that set up open layup opportunities that the Arrows did not miss. Pipestone led at the half 31 to 16.

The second half would see the Arrows extend their lead to as much as 22 points. The Rebels would close the gap just to see the Arrows stretch it back out. The second half was played evenly as the Rebels scored 33 points compared to the Arrows 37. The Rebels just couldn’t get the stops needed to get closer than they did. Taylor Larson had a great second half, scoring 11 points while Ava Deacon and Calleigh Doeden helped keep the Rebels in the game, but it was the Arrows getting the win 68 to 49.

The Rebels shot 31% from the field in the game but the Arrows shot almost 40%. The biggest difference was the open shots the Arrows got from Rebel turnovers. The Rebels were led in scoring by Taylor Larson who finished with 16 points, Ava Deacon 11, and Calleigh Doeden with 11. Thea Schneider and Doeden led the Rebels with 7 rebounds each. The Arrows were led in scoring by Jadyn Kor who scored 32 points one night after she scored over 40 against Edgerton public. The Rebels will be back in action Thursday night at Tyler.
