HBC 55 - MCC 41
The Murray County Central Rebels were back in action after a long holiday break. The Rebels did not play the week of Christmas and didn’t get back on the floor until Thursday night when they travelled to Hills to take on the Patriots of Hills Beaver Creek, the site of the Rebels biggest conference win last season. The Rebels looked like they were ready to beat one of the top teams in the Red Rock Conference on Thursday night but the Rebels offense stopped and Abbie Harris started.
MCC got off to a great start storming out to the quick lead. MCC was led early by Kat Miller who had a couple of outside shots while Thea Schneider and Ava Deacon were able to get some baskets inside. The Rebels were up 21 to 13 with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. That is when the Rebel offense stopped and failed to score for the rest of the half. The Patriots, on the other hand, went on a 13-0 run to take the halftime lead 26 to 21.
The Rebels struggled with turnovers in the second half, as the Patriots put the team in trapping situations. On top of that, the Rebels failed to get many rebounds, allowing HBC to get multiple chances to score. Abbie Harris led her team to the win, scoring 21 points in the game. MCC would score 20 second half points, one shy of their first half total, but the Patriots scored three more points than the first half and HBC got the win 55 to 41.
When looking at the final numbers, the one that crushed the Rebels chances at winning was rebounding. MCC grabbed just 23 rebounds in the game while the Patriots collected 40. The Rebels had 7 more turnovers than the Patriots but the Patriots shot worse than the Rebels from the field. The Rebels Kat Miller led the team with 13 points while Ava Deacon added 9. No one else on the team had more than 4. Abbie Harris scored 21 for the Patriots and was the only player in double figures. MCC wouldn’t have long to worry about this game because they were right back in action on Friday against Lakeview.
