The football regular season moved into week five this past Friday with the MCC Rebels taking on the TMB Panthers. The Rebels and the Panthers play for the helmet which is passed to the winning team of each game they play during the regular season. Last year the Panthers beat the Rebels to win the helmet and this season the Panthers were celebrating Homecoming Friday night. The Rebels were hoping to get the win and get a little revenge on the Panthers for last year’s win. The Rebels took care of business on Friday, on their way to picking up their fourth win of the season.

The Rebels never trailed in this game, as Carson Lewis started the game with a 50 yard touchdown run on the very first play from scrimmage. The two point conversion was a pass from Teague Meyer to Hudson Schryvers to make the score 8-0. MCC got a fumble recovery by Broox Platt on a Trevor Smith QB sneak, on a 4th and one. MCC then drove the field, scoring a touchdown with 4:25 to play in the opening quarter. Gavin Gillette scored on a two yard run and the extra point by Carson Engelkes made the score 15 to 0. The Rebels scored a field goal yet in the first half to lead, 18-0. The Panthers scored a touchdown with just over two minutes to play in the half. David Schuh scored on a one yard run. The two point conversion was completed by Trevor Smith to Griffin Zick. MCC led at the half 18 to 8.

The Panthers would not get closer to the Rebels than those ten points. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Rebels Jordan Sturges got an interception at the Panther thirty yard line. MCC drove inside the Panthers five yard line as the third quarter ended. Carson Lewis started the fourth quarter with a two yard touchdown run and the extra point made the score 25 to 8. It was maybe a sign that the Rebels would score on the first play of the quarter because then both offenses exploded. The Panthers scored a touchdown less than two minutes later on a Trevor Smith one yard run, to make the score 25 to 14. MCC recovered the onside kick following the touchdown and three plays later, Teague Meyer faked out everyone on his way to a 55 yard touchdown run. The extra point made the score 32 to 14. Jordan Sturges picked off his second pass of the half on the next drive by the Panthers. Gavin Gillette would all but seal the game with a 21 yard touchdown run, as the Rebels went ahead 39 to 14 with 2:51 to play. The Panthers got a long pass to Noah Knakmuhs on a deflected pass and David Schuh would score another touchdown with just over a minute and a half left. But, the Rebels would get the win, 39 to 20.

The Rebels are now 4-2 on the season and with two games to play against RTR and Wabasso, are in good shape to qualify for the playoffs in section 3a. The Panthers now drop to 1-4 on the season and with two games left, the Panthers are currently tied with the RTR Knights with one win in the section. The bottom two teams in the section will not qualify for the playoffs, so each game left is very important in their hopes of getting into the playoffs. Carson Lewis led the Rebels with 31 carries for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Teague Meyer ran 8 times for 78 yards and a score. Gavin Gillette had 7 carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Holm ran 8 times for 46 yards and had 1 catch for 11 yards. The Rebels will play Thursday night in Slayton against the RTR Knights.
