The Rebel boys basketball team fell short in a hard-fought battle against RTR, losing 5849 on Tuesday night in Tyler. RTR was riding a 13 game winning streak into this Red Rock Conference game. Despite keeping the game competitive, MCC struggled with shooting efficiency, making just 30% of their field goals compared to RTR’s 39%. Turnovers also played a significant role, as the Rebels committed 16, allowing RTR to capitalize on extra possessions. However, Varsity did win the battle of the boards, grabbing 34 total rebounds to RTR’s 31.
In a competitive matchup, the first half saw both teams trading baskets, with the Knights holding a narrow 25-23 advantage at halftime. Strong defense and efficient scoring kept the game close, as both teams executed well in transition and capitalized on second-chance opportunities. The intensity was high, with neither side able to establish a comfortable lead heading into the break.
As the second half unfolded, MCC took the lead a few minutes into the half, but then Knights began to take control back. They tightened up defensively, forcing key turnovers and converting them into fastbreak points. A combination of timely three-pointers and solid passing and player movement allowed them to gradually take the lead back and extend it. Meanwhile, the Rebels team fought hard to stay within strik-ing distance, relying on their inside presence to keep the game competitive.
In the final minutes, RTR maintained their composure, executing their offense efficiently and closing out defensive possessions with key rebounds. Their ability to limit mistakes and capitalize on scoring opportunities helped them secure a nine-point victory. Despite the loss, both teams displayed great effort and determination, making for an exciting and hard-fought game.
Leading the charge for Varsity, was Max Miller, who had an impressive night with 17 points, shooting 55% from the field, while adding 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Max was 5-10 from beyond the ark. Aidan Swenson and Hudson Schryvers were active, Swenson scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Schryvers recorded 6 rebounds, 4 points, and 3 assists. Gavin Gillette led the team with 7 assists.
Despite a strong rebounding effort and solid individual performances, Varsity’s shooting struggles and turnovers proved costly. The team shot just 59% from the free-throw line, missing key opportunities to close the gap. RTR’s ability to convert their chances more efficiently ultimately made the difference.
