The Rebels traveled to Canby on Monday for their 3rd game in four days to take on the Lancers in a non-conference matchup. Last year’s contest was a nail biter as the Rebels won by a single point 61-60 in Slayton. This year’s contest would have many different faces on the floor for both teams, but with a different result.
MCC would start off the game with full court pressure after an Aidan Swenson bucket. The Rebels would rattle off many tips and steals in the first 4 minutes. Carson Engelkes would intercept a skip pass on the Lancers first trip down the court as the Rebels set the tone and started to build a lead. Dylan Kluis would pace the Rebels with hustle plays on the offensive glass and earning two put back baskets early in the game. Alongside aggressive downhill attacks which seemed to be the entire Rebels team mentality in this contest. The score was 14-4 about 4 minutes in.
MCC would sub five players in to keep fresh and continue the full court pressure. Canby would settle in a little bit and found some open looks from beyond the arc. As the Rebels were digging in too deep in the post and skip passes from one wing to the other would lead to rhythm threes. Max Miller and Cayden Veldhusein would answer back as the duo combined for five three pointers on the night. MCC would extend their lead before subbing the starting five back into the game.
The fresh group of five would continue the pressure, forcuing Canby into tough passes and turnovers. Gavin Gillette would jump passing lanes in the half court and on inbound plays which turned into instant offense on the other end. Gillette finished the game with 10 points on an efficient 5-9 shooting.
MCC continued the five in and five out sub pattern one more time before finishing the half with a mix and matched group. Canby would play man to man against the Rebels and didn’t have an answer for Aidan Swenson. Swenson led the team with 15 points on 7-10 shooting. Great post entry passes would lead to high percentage shots for Swenson, who also battled on the boards and earned second chance points with offensive rebounds. Aidan finished the game with 7 rebounds, 4 offensive.
MCC would speed into the half after a Hudson Schyrvers 3, steal and near buzzer beating 3 point shot, up 56-18.
The second half would start in similar fashion as the starting five would begin the half, this time in a halfcourt man to man defense. Solid execution by this lineup on the offensive end would lead to many high quality shots. The starters would play another 3-4 minutes before their night would be done.
The Rebels bench would continue to execute on the offensive end as 15 of the 18 players on the roster would get in the score book. The Rebels went 13-30 from beyond the arc with Hudson Schryvers, Dylan Kluis, Max Miller, Cayden Veldhuisen, Tristan Behrends, Carter Hanson, Drew Wajer, Eli Gillette, Gabe Tentinger, and Wyatt Thompson all connecting from deep. A balanced attack from all aspects would lead the Rebels to a 93-48 non-conference road win.
