October is recognized as breast cancer awareness month. According to the Minnesota Department of Health there are 170 breast cancer survivors in Murray County. But screening tests can catch breast cancer early when it may be easier to treat. “I encourage all women over 40 to get screened every year” said Kim Konkol, a Slayton area breast cancer survivor. “It is easy to put it off because you are busy, but you need to do this for yourself and your family.”
Events like the Murray County Relay for Life walk are one way ACS raises awareness, but Kim and others are also at work this Fall. “Women 40 and older should not wait for symptoms. Call your doctor and make an appointment to schedule your annual mammogram. October is a good time to remember this!
Women without insurance may qualify for the Minnesota Department of Health’s Sage Program which can pay for mammograms at Murray County Clinic. And women who are diagnosed can find information and support from the American Cancer Society by calling us at 1-800-227-2345.
