A letter from MCC Superintendant Joe Meyer

I want to take a moment to recognize something truly special that took place over the holiday break—something that speaks louder than wins and losses and goes right to the heart of who we are as a school and as a community.

Yesterday, I received an email from the parents of a student-athlete from Jackson County Central, sharing their appreciation for how our players and coaches treated their son during the Dec. 31st game in Marshall. Thomas is a junior at JCC, a student with special needs, and a member of their basketball team. He was able to enter the game late and, in a moment that will surely be remembered, made a three-point shot.

What stood out most to his parents was not just the basket—it was the gym’s response. Players, coaches, and fans—including our team and LQPV—stood and cheered for Thomas in an incredible display of sportsmanship and humanity. His parents shared a photo capturing that moment.

To our student-athletes: thank you for showing the kind of leadership that cannot be coached on a whiteboard. Thank you for recognizing another young man’s moment and celebrating it as if it were your own. To our coaches: thank you for setting the tone and modeling what we value—character, dignity, and respect.

We talk often about building better players, but even more so about building better people. Moments like this remind us that we are doing exactly that.

I am extremely proud of our students, our coaches, and our school. Laura gave permission to share her email with our MCC Community. You can find this below.

Joe Meyer Hello. My name is Laura Bidne. I am a teacher at Jackson County Central, but am sending a message as a parent.

My son - Thomas - is a junior at JCC and he has special needs. He also is part of the basketball team.

On Dec 31st we were playing TMB in Marshall. Thomas was able to go into that game and he made a three point shot at the end. My favorite picture of the game is everyone cheering for him - including your team and LQPV who were waiting for their game.

I included the picture with this email and wanted to commend your coaches and the young men on your team. These moments make all the difference to kids like my son Thomas!

Please thank them on behalf of my husband and I.

Thank you. Mike and Laura Bidne
