Murray County School Board met on June 10, 2024. The agenda, minutes from last meeting, and financials were approved.
Superintendent Personnel Recommendations included a new Jr. High Science teacher, Shannon Wolske and new Custodian, Aaron Bakke. The 2425 Literacy Plan was discussed and explained.
Elementary Principal Patrick Freeman presented his report. The expected enrollment for 2024-2025 is 376, up 7 from this year. Freeman recapped the 5th/6th Grade Band Concert, Elementary PBIS Celebration Day, Kindergarten and 6th Grade Graduations and Elementary Awards Assembly.
Eight K-6 students accepted ESY Services for this summer, as well as, 16 early childhood students. MCC applied for and was awarded the Nibbe Family Foundation grant for a book vending machine. This will be part of our PBIS prizes. By the end of summer, Nancy Boerboom will have completed her LETRS Facilitator training, meaning she will be able to monitor/organize any LETRS Live Sessions going forward in our district. The Literacy plan is done and will be posted to the website.
MCC will be shifting to a new schedule next year for 5th/6th Grade. Students will be assigned a homeroom teacher but will have each of 4 teachers throughout the day for specific subjects or content. Also, next year we will implement WIN (What I Need) time in grades K-6. This 20-30 minute period will be where students will be receiving intervention support on certain subject areas or to challenge students with STEM or other projects. Finally, we will be incorporating SEL and Leadership curriculum in our K-6 Phy Ed/Music classes.
The Little Rebels/ECFE shared their numbers with the board. 152 children impacted, 145 parents involved.
Secondary Principal Jake Scandrett gave his end of year stats. We ended the year with 307 students and are projecting 318 to start next year. He recapped the end of year. Senior Awards day they gave out $50,000 in scholarships thanks to our generous community and donors. Graduation went well. 56% of our students are going to a 2-year school, 36% to a 4 year school and 8% to work.
Nine students are taking advantage of our credit recovery summer school. Teachers had their first introduction on AI Training from William Grube of Gruvy Education. There is a lot to learn and they will be doing more with this transformative technology in the future. The second CEO class held a Trade Show event and there was also a launch/signing, with two MCC students participating next year. Mr. Scandrett met with the high school teachers and had a good discussion regarding class size, balancing numbers and the need to prepare for future changes in the schedule.
Superintendent Joe Meyer gave an update on the legislative session that just ended. The Education Supplemental Budget Bill’s key areas are: the Read Act, student absenteeism and addressing teacher shortages. Supt. Meyer, Scandrett and Freeman will be attending a leadership conference to find out more.
June 19th the school buildings will be closed. School is not allowed for Juneteenth holiday.
Mental Health/Social Worker Greg Scheitel submitted a written yearly report. MCC has been awarded a grant of $24,537 for an Emily’s Hope preventative curriculum. MSHSL 2024-2025 membership fees are going down.
We will be working on the updated 10-year Long Term Facility Maintenance budget and Plan and will have it ready for the July board meeting , which is July 15, due to July 4th holiday. Activities report was given. Teams and individuals did well. Sharon Johnson and Britta Malchow presented the QComp annual review. They are grateful that we became a Q-Comp school when it first became available, as the state is not presently accepting any more schools. Property & Liability Insurance Renewal – Carisa Clarke and Samantha Tutt, with KDL Insurance, presented the prepared proposal for property/liability insurance provided by EMC Insurance. The total package has increased to $103,899.33 which includes adjustments in deductibles, structure additions and specific provisions for the FFA Corn Drive and Murray County Comfort Dog. The MN State High School League Renewal was approved. MREA Membership for 2024-2025 was approved. Consider MSBA Membership for 2024-2025 was approved.
GBB was approved to travel to Wisconsim Dells in July.
Resolution Authorizing the Issuance of Order Not Paid for Want of Funds (Warrant Account Agreement with Minnwest Bank) was approved.
Resolution Establishing Dates for Filing Affidavits of Candidacy I. Engagement Letter, with CPAs Meulebroeck, Taubert & Co. was approved.
