The MCC Rebels were back at home on Tuesday night. The Rebels played host to the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen in a Red Rock Conference matchup. The Rebels and the Dutchmen are two of the teams in the middle of the Subsection 3A South standings and in the middle of the Red Rock Conference. With the season quickly coming to an end, each win becomes that much more important for teams hoping to host a first round playoff game. The Rebels would leave no doubt who was the better team on Tuesday.
The Rebels and the Flying Dutchmen are teams with a wide spread of players in terms of age. The Dutchmen are the younger team by far, with just two seniors on the roster compared to the Rebels 4, but both teams play players that will be back for at least one or more years. The two teams also rely on two freshmen to help in their regular rotations. The Rebels have played most of the season with a balanced offense, as they have waited for a player to step up and take the reins as the go to player. Maybe on Tuesday they found that player. Suttyn Schryvers the team’s 5’10” freshman put down a team high 14 kills in the game. With her strong play over the last two weeks, she has been the most consistent hitter the Rebels have had. Her hitting numbers attest to her improved play. The Flying Dutchmen rely heavily on Reese Vande Griend on the offensive side, whether she is up front or on the back row. The Rebels did a nice job of containing her throughout the game. Though she led her team in kills, the Rebels defense and pressure was too much for Edgerton.
The Rebels won game one 25 to 16. The Rebels got off to a great start and though the Dutchmen made a run early in the game, the Rebels took control for the win. In game two, the Rebels blocking at the net stepped up for key points, especially late in the game as Peyton DeGreeff and Lila Scandrett made plays. The Rebels won 25 to 13. The Rebels were able to get everyone in the action, as MCC closed out the game in three, beating Edgerton 25 to 12 in the final set.
The Rebels dominated the action throughout the match Tuesday night. Suttyn Schryvers led the Rebels with 14 kills, while Thea Schneider added 8, and Peyton DeGreeff added 6. Defensively, Thea Schneider and Kate Blankenship led the Rebels with 12 digs each, while Emmi Peltola added 10. Kelli Miller led the Rebels with 18 set assists. Schneider added 17 in a very balanced game for the Rebels senior. MCC will play in the Jimmy Johns Classic in Marshall Friday and Saturday opening the tournament with a very tough MACCRAY Wolverine team. The Rebels are now 9 and 5 on the season.
