LETTER TO THE EDITOR

This is Kevin Nelson, owner of Nelson Storage in Slayton. Recently, the city invited Woodstock Telephone and Anco to install fiber optics in town. They are storing their equipment by my property in the industrial park. They have been using the road called Champ Drive to enter and exit their storage area. Champ Drive runs from Hwy 30 thru my property and out to the east to Murray Ave. I don’t have a problem with it because it is a city street. But one resident (who is also a city employee) on the east end of Champ Drive, didn’t like the excess traffic on his part of the road, so he went to the city and had them close the east end. There isn’t any heavy equipment going thru the east end, just pickups and trailers. I have a business that is now blocked off from the east side, because of one person complaining about the traffic. They discussed it at a city council meeting 2 weeks ago and decided to close the road all summer because of one complaint. I wasn’t invited to that meeting to voice my opinion on the matter. So, this last meeting Monday night I went to voice my concern over the road closure to the east. I knew that they weren’t going to change their minds, once they decided 2 weeks ago on one person’s complaint. I brought up that they should probably close other roads in town because of excess traffic, example the fair coming up or maybe the people on Juniper should complain because of the soccer games in the spring. I guess you have to be a city employee to get special privileges. So if you think there is too much traffic on your street, just call city hall and have it closed indefinitely.
