This week’s gardening column will discuss what we noticed in seed catalogues and local stores selling seeds and supplies. We usually look for what’s new this year. New varieties especially. Normally hybrids.
In checking Gurney’s catalogue we find nearly 50 different varieties of tomatoes. In size they range from cherry tomato size to beefsteak tomatoes which would need only a single slice for a hamburger sandwich.
Do note that the smaller ones are ready earlier than the larger tomatoes. Some come in colors too - other than just red ones. Another garden vegetable with many varieties is sweet corn. We counted nearly 30 varieties of sweet corn - including popcorn too. The new sweet corn varieties are hybrid and promise to be very sweet. And sometimes big ears.
Do note that some hybrids must not be planted near a different hybrid. In that case it helps to have a bigger garden so sweet corn can be planted on opposite sides of the garden. Then there should be no interaction.
Most of the sweet corn varieties should be ready to eat about July 4th. Then you can have the first corn and first potatoes too.
Another possible problem - trying to raise gourds near squashes and pumpkins. Another mistake.
Admittedly buying from the catalogues may be a bit pricey but the quality. is there and the seeds will grow.
We notice some local stores which have a rack of seeds for 10c a pack. We suspect they are leftover seeds from past years. Good for fillers or if you are on a strict budget.
Also new each year we see new roses and sometimes new apple trees. Not to mention flower collections too. Not to mention whatever else they stock for you to grow and enjoy.
As mentioned in past columns, it’s a good idea to place an order early before some seeds sell out - especially the new varieties (even if expensive).
This will keep you busy until Spring arrives. Keep your house plants cared for too.
Until next week.
