By Arnold Krusemark First a personal note - This writer underwent major surgery. When discharged from the hospital we saw several things to include in this column.
First, many farm corn fields are turning brown. Not ready yet for harvest - but soon. Our tenant is working on his harvest equipment repairs. When we saw several markets which included this year’s garden produce. In at least one case that meant at least 300 pumpkins, the same number of squash and whatever else they have a good surplus of.
This reminded us of Halloween then we had a family event of first selecting a pumpkin, then making a Jack o’ Lantern out of it and finally enjoying when we lit the candle inside for a few nights.
We’ve also already mentioned stocking up on whatever you will need during the winter in your basement.
A few squashes and the like are always handy at times. Sometime we can remember having a whole squash when we had company for dinner. And there is another special event this week-end - the change of season from Summer to Autumn, Saturday September 28th. Time: 11:44 pm. Not time yet to set your clocks back, but the days are getting shorter, the weather cooler and already we hear of conversations when we will get the first snow flakes. And then getting the outside chores done before winter sets in.
This will keep us busy too. And the conversation at farmers’ market includes how your garden did this year.
Be sure to care for your house plants too.
Until next week.
