GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark It is now September and summer is unofficially over. The kids are back in school so many sweet corn stands have closed. Garden work is now limited to week-ends and a little time before sunset. Farmers are gearing up and getting ready for harvest. This writer remembers about this time it was time to fill silo so the cattle would have feed over winter.

As for our garden much of the work is occasional weeding but mostly collecting what we have grown. And if you planted a fall garden that should be showing up above ground shortly.

And back inside the house its time to clear a place in the basement to store our produce for win-ter. If it rains we have things inside the house to get done. Then we hope there will be enough to get us through the winter. My parents and grand parents remembered whatever they grew and got stored had to last the family until spring. We can also mention canning some fruit from the orchard or supermarket too.

And then checking the Farmers’ Markets for what we are short on. Much more to get done and soon. And don’t forget your house plants too. Until next week.
