Family Medicine doctor Lawrence “Larry” Sanchez is excited to be seeing patients in the clinic at Murray County Medical Center in Slayton. Having started on July 8 with a week of orientation, he is now available to see patients of all ages.
Along with being a board certified Family Medicine provider, Sanchez is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. “Slayton is a nice rural community, and I am glad I can practice medicine with an organization that fits my philosophy of care,” he said. “I am working in the clinic and by the end of the year will be working in the hospital, too. I see both acute and chronic medical conditions. I feel comfortable managing multiple medical conditions — anxiety, depression, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and cardiovascular conditions to name a few.”
Having worked in rural medicine for most of the past 23 years, Sanchez said he feels more personal and professional satisfaction when working in rural clinics compared to larger cities. “I like the fact that in a rural clinic, I can take care of generations of family members,” Sanchez said. “I have always enjoyed living in a small town as a medical provider. In a rural area, I feel I can spend a little extra time building the doctor-patient relationship by listening to my patients, educating my patients on their medical conditions, and having my patients participate in their healthcare.”
Along with having a passion for rural healthcare, the decision to move to the Slayton area was also sparked by the desire to be closer to family. His wife, Misty, is an Iona native. “My family is now calling Slayton, Minnesota our home,” Sanchez said. “Misty, my wife, is looking forward to starting her mental health counseling career here in town. Noah, my son, loves his new daycare. Our two cockapoos, Mr. Bojangles and Axel, are enjoying barking at the neighborhood walkers and dogs.”
Prior to starting the job at MCMC, Dr. Sanchez owned and practiced for the past four years at the Blue Elk Family Clinic in Nashville, Indiana, where he was a solo family practitioner. Before that, he worked in various clinic settings and at jails in addition to performing in-home patient evaluations. “I picked MCMC because of its commitment to compassionate and exceptional healthcare — two goals I work at achieving daily in how I care for patients,” he said. “I have always enjoyed science and talking with people. I find that I can do this in medicine by getting to know my patients and learning about their lives. I work with my patients to find lifestyle changes and medications to help give them the quality of life they desire.”
Sanchez received his undergraduate education at the University of California, Riverside. He went through medical school at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Sanchez enjoys collecting Pepsi and Ford Thunderbird memorabilia, along with fishing, watching movies and spending time with family.
