SLAYTON, MN — The heavy thud of hooves against the packed arena dirt, the gleam of polished leather harnesses, and the unmistakable scent of hay and horses greeted visitors as they made their way into the Murray County Fairgrounds this past weekend. From July 11–13, the 19th Annual Murray County Draft Horse Show brought tradition to life, offering three days of breathtaking displays of horsepower, family legacy, and community spirit.

Nine six-horse hitches—some of the finest in the Midwest—took to the ring on both Friday and Saturday evenings. From the towering Percherons to the feather-footed Clydesdales and the powerful Belgians, each team captivated the audience with their precision and power, drawing gasps and applause with every high-stepping pass around the arena.

Among the teams, one entry had special significance for local fans—JR Biren’s Belgians, proudly owned and exhibited by Joe Biren of Iona. The Biren family has been part of the show since its earliest days and returned this year with the same passion that helped launch the event nearly two decades ago.

“It’s nice to be back in the ring again,” Biren shared after the show. “We have some work to do, but they did pretty good for their first time in the arena.” His humble pride was evident as the big blond Belgians responded to the crowd with their signature stride. Draft Horse Classic: Page 2
