BOARD REVERSES ARPA REQUEST

By Joanne Bergman The Murray County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 with a short agenda. The request of Soil and Water for the quarterly allocation in the amount of $49,069.75 was approved following the report of activities given by Shelly Lewis.

The ARPA Committee requested approval of the final three expenditures from the $1,5911,588 received from the federal government following the COVID epidemic. The first action was to approve $15,491.00 as grant matching funds for an EV Charging Station grant. If the grant application is not approved the funds will be automatically allocated for childcare initiatives in the county. The EDA will administer the funds. The second request was not approved with Commissioners Thiner, Welgraven and Meier casting the negative votes. The ARPA Committee request had been to allocate $150,000 to the Wonder World Preschool for its relocation project. If the funds were not distributed by July 31, 2025 the funds would be allocated to childcare initiatives in the county to be administered through the EDA. With the Board’s action the $150,000 will be added to the County’s Capital Improvement Fund to be used for child care projects. Welgraven and Thiner discussed what they thought to be an excessive cost for the new facility.

EDA Director Justine Wettschrek will be surveying the twenty one day care providers within Murray County in regard to their wants and needs and the costs with which they may need support.

Facilities Manager Nathan Wurpts requested approval for the installation of a new furnace and air conditioner for the Historical Museum. Currently the west wing of the building does not have HVAC so space heaters have been used. One interested business has agreed to provide the installation. A cost, not to exceed $10,000 for completion of the project was approved by the Board.
