GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener

Dogs often cause brown spots of dead grass in the lawn. Their urine acts like fertilizer burn. The treatment is the same. Thoroughly water the area to dilute the soil. It may not be practical, but it is effective.

Check the lower leaves of tomato plants and perennials for discoloration, spotting, and yellowing. Remove those problems.

To reduce spray hazards, spray early in the morning when the air is still and there is less activity in the yard.

THEOLOGY IN THE TRENCHES

Anthills The donut shaped mounds dotted the driveway. One could not help but see the dark dot smack dab center. Like donut holes they were with their puffy roundedness along the country road…undisturbed by rain now for many a week.

Perhaps the dryness eased the burden of the granules needing to be moved. Up and out they were pushed by the troops of ants doing their business along the gravel road. Building high rises, condos and little cities was their mode of operation.

GREEN THUMB

July 4th is past and our gardening continues. This writer was at the Slayton Farmers’ Market this past Thursday.

One seller said she had been there four weeks already. In the beginning it was mostly canned goods. Gardening produce of this year is now appearing.

She had giant rhubarb spears, giant onions and a few other garden produce.

The onions were of the size for one slice onion which would cover a whole hamburger,

More produce to come when it is big enough to pick.

Otherwise it would help if we got a little more rain.

Good News

If an ordinary piece of steel is attached to a magnet, the steel will eventually become magnetized. This is a great example of what it’s like to become more like Jesus. After all, we are to be ‘one with Him.’ (John 17:20- 21). Ephesians chapter 4: tells us of God’s desire for his children to mature and become more and more like Jesus in our everyday lives -and allowing His life to be lived through us. The Lord gave the Church the five-fold ministry which is: Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher.

STARTING YOUR DAY OFF RIGHT

Getting into the swing of things each morning can sometimes feel like a struggle. Whether it’s the hectic and stressful summer activity schedule that’s draining us or we’re sore from a good summer workout- starting the day on a positive note is not always easy. However, by setting up an intentional routine for our morning schedules, we can incorporate actions that ensure a more optimistic and productive day ahead. Here are a few ideas to consider adding into your day:

Ask A Trooper Sgt. Troy H. Christianson MN State Patrol PIO

Question: What is the law with regard to insurance cards? I was told it must always be available in the vehicle and then I was told that if you do not have it, there is no fine if you produce it within three days. What exactly are the statutes with regard to having your driver’s license on you while driving?
