The MCC Rebels played their second game of the new year Tuesday night in Pipestone. The Rebels have been struggling with turnovers and shooting all season long but going to Pipestone they were facing a team who like the Rebels would be missing their leading scorer on the season. MCC was without their top scorer on the season as well but the size wasn’t going to play a big factor in the game as both teams were without their top low post players. MCC would play a tough game at their best in some time but it wouldn’t be enough.
MCC did get off to a great start as the Rebels scored the first five points in the game with Abby Overman leading the way. The Rebels lead disappeared quickly as the Arrows scored the next 8 points. MCC regained the lead 14-11 after a pair of baskets, one by Jayda Hellewell and another by Zoey Iverson with 6:40 to play in the first half. The Arrows would go on a big run after some big shots and MCC turnovers. Pipestone scored 11 straight points, most coming from Aubrey Kor who finished the first half with 15 points. MCC would trail the Arrows 28-20 at the end of the first half. MCC had a great first half outrebounding the Arrows 30-23 but the Rebels turned the ball over 13 times compared to Pipestones 6.
The second half was led by the Arrows with leads growing to as many as 11 points. MCC would hang around and with 9:05 left in the game, MCC trailed 37-33. Zoey Iverson was red hot to start the second half scoring six of the team’s first 8 points. The Arrows would push the lead back to 14 points with 5:30 to play. MCC would get a boost from the bench by Kelli Miller the freshman guard made two three-point shots and Mary Lou McNab would score 3 points as MCC got back within 4 52-48 with less than three minutes to play. The Arrows would finish the game strong scoring 6 straight points to make the final score 58-48.
The Rebels outshot the Arrows for the game making 36% of their shots while the Arrows made just 29% of their own. The Rebels outrebounded Pipestone 50-45. The difference would be free throws and the 31-17 advantage in turnovers Pipestone had over MCC. Mary Lou McNab scored 10 points and had 6 rebounds. Casey Miller had just two points but led the game with 12 rebounds. Zoey Iverson scored 9 points and had 5 boards. Abby Overman scored 9 points. Aubrey Kor led the Arrows with 30 points and Madeline Wiese added 10. The Rebels will play Thursday in Edgerton to wrap up a busy week.
