Lonnie Leebens was born on May 31, 1942, on the family farm in Belfast Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Elmer and Carolina Breeze Leebens. Lonnie grew up on the family farm near Dundee, MN and graduated from Fulda High School in 1960. On November 26, 1960, he and Marian Canfield were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN. Following their marriage made their home on a farm near Dundee and Lonnie worked at the Morrell Packing Plant in Worthington, MN. They later moved to a home in Lime Creek, MN where Lonnie worked for a creamery company for a short time before moving to Storden, MN where Lonnie worked for the elevator. They then started working their way southwest and moved to Wirock, MN with that move, Lonnie started working for Slayton International and in 1971 they moved to Slayton, MN.
Lonnie retired in 2004. Marian passed away on December 9, 2013. Lonnie remained in his home until 2023 when he moved to Maple Lawn Senior Care Center in Fulda, MN. He passed away there on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the age of 83.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton where he served as elder, trustee, and usher. He also was member of Pheasants Forever and in his younger days he was a racetrack official for the Murray County Speedway.
Lonnie enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, bowling, restoring tractors, and collecting toy tractors.
Survivors include his four children, Scott and Tina of Renner, SD, Russ Leebens of Okoboji, IA, Barb Bangasser of Slayton, MN, and Rick and Lisa Leebens of Slayton, MN, nine grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren with one on the way any day, and one brother, Rog and Janell Leebers of Sioux Falls, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marian and sister, Sharon and Ralph Schroeder.
Funeral Services were at Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeffrey Williams officiating. The organist was Kathy Schwartz. The pallbearers were Zach Leebens, Eric Leebens, Evan Leebens, Kent Shea, Leon Kruse, and Darwin Johnson. The honorary pallbearers were Riley Walz, Brad Miller, and Wade Gunnink. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.
Visitation was on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4-6 p.m and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
