James Schrantz, 91, formerly of Slayton, passed away on Oct. 10, 2021, at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island, Minn. where he had been residing due to failing health since December 2014.

James was born on April 21, 1930, in Slayton to Leon and Cecilia Schrantz. He was raised in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1948. He attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. then enlisted in the United States Air Force. In 1954 he married Mary Jean Mich where they resided until Dec. 2014. They raised 4 children.

James worked for Schrantz Brothers Electric following marriage and eventually owned and operated Schrantz Electric; and became a master electrician. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Slayton Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially the Canadian fishing trips with friends and family. In his later years he enjoyed pontoon rides with family on the Mississippi River. James enjoyed spending time with his family and spent many years vacationing in the winter in Arizona and traveled to Maryland visiting children and grandchildren.

James is preceded in death by his wife Jeanne and his parents Leon and Cecilia Schrantz, and one brother who passed in infancy. He is survived by 4 children, Cathy (Robert) Peters, Laurel, MD.; Richard (Michelle), Rochester, Mn.; Julie (Gordon) Giefer, Pine Island, MN.; and Rebecca (Edward) Lilly, Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Getzel of St. Cloud, MN and his brothers, David Schrantz of Pine Island, Mn.; Michael Schrantz of Fort Myers Fl. and Thomas Schrantz of Slayton, Mn. He was the proud grandpa of 8 grandchildren and a great grandpa of 9 children and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a private service and burial along with his wife Jeanne at St. Ann’s Cemetery in June 12, 2022.
