Dorothy Anna Mears departed this life peacefully on November 22, 2022. She was 100 years old and was known for her humor, kindness, compassion, and positive outlook on life.
Dorothy was born on February 25, 1922, to Herman Conrad and Anna Pushinsky in Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada and graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1940. While in high school, Dorothy took general college preparatory courses and ran track and field. She won several medals for running, broad jump, and high jump.
Dorothy attended Niagara General Hospital Nursing Program and received a Registered Nursing degree in 1943. After graduation from nursing school, she worked as a local Registered Nurse and had adventures traveling across Canada and the United States as a traveling nurse.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Dr. William (Bill) A. Mears on May 15, 1948, and in 1951 they moved to Worthington, Minnesota where Dr. Mears practiced veterinary medicine at the Worthington Veterinary Clinic. They purchased the Slayton Veterinary Clinic in 1954, where Dorothy worked for more than 27 years until 1986, when she retired. Dorothy was active in Christ Lutheran Church ladies aid and promoted civic and educational activities. After retiring, Dorothy enjoyed travel throughout the world with her children and remained in Slayton until 2010, when she moved to Bellevue, WA to be close to family.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Herman Conrad and Anna Pushinsky, daughter Dr. Susan Mears, sisters Gertrude Hornby and Bernice Malouin. She is survived by 5 children; Anne Grimes, of Bellevue WA, David (Caryn) Mears of Kennewick, WA, Bruce Mears of Las Vegas, NV, Kent Mears of Dallas, TX and Dr. Kevin (Linda) Mears of Silverdale, WA. There are 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
