Daniel Lee Short, 77, passed peacefully on June 9, 2025, at Commonwealth Senior Living in South Boston, Virginia.
Dan (“Danny” to his family and close friends) was born on May 20,1948, in Slayton, Minnesota, to John and Gretta Short. He was the fourth of five siblings. He attended the University of Minnesota for a year before joining the Navy, where he served 4 years. He then returned to Slayton where he assisted his parents at the Ridotto Inn while earning his B.S. in Business from Southwest Minnesota State University. During this time, he met his future wife, Lin Ferguson, and they were married in Slayton on August 16th, 1974. Dan loved bow hunting and spending time with friends.
After their marriage, Dan and Lin moved to Minneapolis where Dan took a position with Target. After welcoming their first daughter, MacKenzie, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where they welcomed their second daughter, Kendall. They eventually settled in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Dan spent the rest of his career in the retail world, sourcing and developing products, training buyers and building business relationships. His work required frequent travel to Asia and all over the United States. When not working, he loved taking walks, playing rounds of golf, and going to the beach.
He is survived by his wife Lin, his daughters MacKenzie and Kendall, his four grandchildren, his sister Patricia Malinowski (Nicholai); his brother Dale Short (Margaret); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John J. and Gretta J. Short; his brothers Robert “Bob,” and Roger; his aunt Margaret “Marg” Short, and others. Per Dan’s wishes, there will be no public service and his ashes will be spread in the waters off the coast of Emerald Isle. May Dan’s memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, those wishing to honor Dan’s memory are asked to consider a donation to one of the following organizations: Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Celiac Disease Foundation, Local Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, or a charity of your choice.
